We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this
Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Obama asserted his Constitutional credentials during an interview with the New York Times that was published on Saturday. During the interview, the Times asked if Obama had any consultation with a lawyer before he unilaterally suspended the employer mandate portion of his own healthcare law.
The employer mandate would require employers with 50 employees or more to provide health insurance.
That provision was expected to take effect on Jan 1, 2014, but Obama has ordered it to be delayed for a year. Congress has criticized the president for wanting to delay his own law and critics are explaining that the president does not have the power to do any such thing.
Yet Obama disagrees.
"And if Congress thinks that what I've done is inappropriate or wrong in some fashion, they're free to make that case," Obama said. "But there's not an action that I take that you don't have some folks in Congress who say that I'm usurping my authority. Some of those folks think I usurp my authority by having the gall to win the presidency. And I don't think that's a secret."
"But, ultimately, I'm not concerned about their opinions--very few of them, by the way, are lawyers, much less constitutional lawyers," Obama concluded.
Obama has constitutional law credentials, having worked as a lecturer in constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. He worked part-time at the university from 1992 to 2004.
Despite his pedigree, a lot of legal scholars disagree that Obama has the authority to suspend the implementation of part of his own law, no matter how bad his law may be.
