Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >
Why this high profile resignation will cost millions

Jesse Jackson Jr.'s swift resignation, on the heels of his reelection, will cost taxpayers a lot of money. Under investigation by federal authorities for alleged misuse of campaign funds, Jackson suddenly resigned even before the latest votes were certified, citing a mental health condition.

CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - That sudden departure will cost taxpayers, although it is not clear how much. It will at least be in the millions and could possibly run as high as $5.1 million according to the state elections board.
The reason for the price tag is the state must prepare and hold two elections, a primary and a general, and both elections will be special elections, so they will not be piggybacked on normal, already paid-for elections.
This bill is just the latest one to hit taxpayers as a result of Jackson's activities. According to prosecutors, Jackson may have inappropriately spent money monitored by Congress. Jackson has admitted to being the subject of no less than two separate federal investigations.
The House Ethics Committee and the FBI are both investigating him.
Despite these investigations, and his long absence (since June) for bipolar disorder treatment, Jackson was reelected by a large margin.
Jackson has also cited clinical depression and gastrointestinal problems for his absence from work. He is being treated at the Mayo Clinic.
Jackson's hijinks have not been restricted to money. In 2007, Jackson nearly came to blows with Republican legislator, Lee Terry (R - NB) and he challenged Terry to a fight. Although Jackson eventually backed down from the challenge, a man later claiming to be his "hit man" showed up in Terry's office, which prompted an immediate FBI investigation.
Despite the high cost to replace Jackson, it may be well worth it. The troubled representative has been expensive in terms of behavior, investigations, and now special elections. In addition, there is no telling how much money he has misspent, if such allegations are true.
Although taxpayers are spending upwards of $5 million to replace the troubled Jackson, the cost may pay off in savings later.
