LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The paper's endorsement is one of the most desired ones in the state it is difficult to get.

The published statement said, "We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job. We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear."

The paper continues by technology that Newt Gingrich may not be the perfect candidate but that he should be the preferred one. The editorial said that voters "too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running."

The paper also knowledge that Newt Gingrich has made substantial contributions to Washington DC in the past. "A lot of candidates say they're going to improve Washington. Newt Gingrich has actually done that, and in this race he offers the best shot of doing it again," wrote publisher Joe McQuaid.

This is a substantial boost for Gingrich who has only recently emerged as a Republican front runner as other candidates had each taken their turn at the spotlight and come up short. Among the candidates, Newt Gingrich is probably the most experienced politician and his conservative credentials are beyond question.

Gingrich's campaign director Andrew Hemingway said, "we are honored to have the endorsement of the union leader. This is an enormous boost to our campaign and further proof the people of New Hampshire are wanting substance and solutions over soundbites and pandering."

Now all eyes will be on New Hampshire is that state prepares for its early primary scheduled to take place on January 10. A win in New Hampshire will give Gingrich a critical boost that could solidify his front-runner status and set him up to run against Obama in 2012.

Although Gingrich has not shown himself to be as charismatic or popular as candidates such as Perry, or Cain, many prefer him to the alternative that Romney offers. Romney has politicked heavily in New Hampshire for the past two years but those efforts do not appear to be paying off. Many voters expressed concern about some of Romney's policy choices as governor of Massachusetts, and there also appears to be a perceptual problem on account of Romney's religious beliefs (Mormonism).

In any case, Newt Gingrich is extending his lead and is now the candidate to watch.
