The Herminator: Herman Cain Wins Big in Florida, Wins Big on Saturday Night Live
FREE Catholic Classes
Saturday Night Live recently featured a skit on Herman Cain. Maybe it will revive an otherwise down time on that show. Those who have watched it for many years know that it goes through cycles with its talent. Just as the prognosis for the "second tier" candidates has improved in the Republican primary, maybe this American comedy icon will ride the wave.

P>WASHINGTON,D.C. (Catholic Online) - 'All bets are off' is the new mantra for the talking heads seeking to predict the outcome of the Republican Primary campaign in the lead up to the 2012 election. The most recent excursion into this land of uncertainty came was Dana Milbank of the Washington Post.He wrote a piece entitled "Can Herman Cain deliver an upset?"
I wrote an article following Herman Cain's win in the Florida straw poll entitled "Pro-Life, Pro-Family, Pro-Freedom Herman Cain Wins Florida Straw." I am a long time fan of the candidate. In an age of political spin and manufactured candidates he is a breath of fresh air.Next to my friend Rick Santorum, he is the most intriguing of the other candidates. However, I admit I also think that Newt Gingrich is brilliant.
Herman Cain's victory is being billed as a surprise by many in the media. It has shocked the Republican political establishment. It should not come as a surprise to those who have been watching this 2012 Republican Presidential primary race carefully. People want a pro-life, pro-marriage and pro-freedom candidate. They are not going to accept the handpicked Republican establishment candidate - not this time. Been there, done that!
Herman Cain has been unafraid to speak of his convictions with clarity, charm and conviction. He done so on many issues. He has clearly identifiable positions on economic issues and he is developing clarity and consistency on matters of foreign policy.
Cain is a successful businessman and a non-politician with absolutely no political experience. This is increasingly appealing to many. His career of service, success in business and family life are exemplary. He has a down to earth speaking style and his speeches are regularly sprinkled with a kind of "everyman" humor which is refreshing; especially after so much scripting.
His most cited executive accomplishment is as the former Godfather's Pizza Chief Executive. However, he has a proven record in the banking industry and in several other business endeavors. He has made payroll and managed budgets. He is a "self made man" with a love for America and a smile which makes the observer smile and captures his spirit.
Herman Cain won the Florida Straw Poll decisively. He garnered 37 percent of the vote. Rick Perry took 15 percent and Mitt Romney took 14 percent. Showing a growing strength in the wake of a strong performance at the Florida debate, Rick Santorum took a respectable 11 percent. Ron Paul took 10 percent, Newt Gingrich, 8.4 percent, John Huntsman, 2.3 percent and Michelle Bachmann finished last with only 1.5 percent.
He gave an official statement upon hearing the good news, "Thank you to the Republican voters for this incredible honor of being named the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll in Florida today. This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored. I will continue to share my message of 'common-sense solutions' across this country and look forward to spending more time in Florida, a critical state for both the nomination and the general election."
The efforts of the Republican political establishment to pick the 2012 nominee of the Republican Party are over. Herman Cain's victory in the Florida straw poll signals the beginning of the real primary campaign. There are surprises to come as the formerly "last tier" candidates begin to emerge as more capable of contending with the President in the 2012 campaign than any of those establishment candidates.
That "icon" of American culture, Saturday Night Live, recently featured a skit on Cain. Expect many more. Maybe, just maybe, it will revive an otherwise down time on that show. Those who have watched it for many years know that it goes through cycles with its talent. This has been one of the down times with very little which is really funny. Just as the prognosis for the "second tier" candidates has improved in the Republican primary, maybe this American comedy icon will ride the wave.
In a skit featuring Kenan Thompson Cain states "There is no better motto for the federal government than that of a pizza place...It's 4 o'clock in the morning and you're high as a kite and the stuff in your fridge is weirding you out - if you order it, pizza will come. Pizza will come! Oh, pizza will most definitely come. And if you vote for me, America, I promise you that I will deliver."
Showing he is the kind of down to earth candidate the Nation longs for, Cain received the imitation well and used it to his advantage. He told Fox News "I think it's great!I'm going to use that in my next debate: If you vote for me, America, I will deliver."
He had comments for the Press after his victory in Florida. "The takeaway from Florida, that we took away, is that number one, the citizens movement is more powerful than the establishment wants to give me credit for. So yes, they keep treating me like the Rodney Dangerfield of this primary contest. The people out in the field are saying we want to send a message to Washington, D.C. The establishment is not going to make this call, the people are going to make the call and that's what you saw in the Florida straw poll."
"Look, the Iowa straw poll you can stack the deck, you can practically buy that. Several people tried to do it and now you see what happened. With all due respect to Representative Michele Bachmann, but her star has fallen because it was temporary. The difference is in Florida, these were delegates that were making the call, they were making the call based on who they saw with the most substance in that message."
"Now they're going to have to talk about Herman Cain, as my name ID goes up. They are going to compare Cain versus more of the same. Cain versus more of the same is what's coming through. And that's what you saw in Florida. They prefer Cain and not more of the same."
As for the Saturday Night Live skit, Cain is smart enough to use it. "I think that's great. I'm going to use that in my next debate. 'If you vote for me America, I will deliver.' That's what people are hearing." Keep it up Herman Cain, America is finally paying attention.
