Goliath is Still Standing: The Battle against Planned Parenthood

Defunding Planned Parenthood is non-negotiable. Period

The Pence amendment to defund Planned Parenthood (and other pro-life amendments) in the continuing resolution was like David taking the field and yelling. It was not the fight; it was the pregame show. The real fight must happen now, since the Senate has again rejected the Pence amendment.

P>WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - Imagine the "David and Goliath" story with a slightly different twist.  After Goliath taunts the armies of Israel for 40 days, David emerges, ready to fight. With King Saul's permission, David takes the field of battle. For the first time, an Israelite is willing to stand in defiance of Goliath. The Israelite army rejoices.

Goliath roars his contempt, and curses David by his false gods: "I will give your flesh to the birds of the air!" he thunders.David, unafraid, shouts back: "You come to me with sword and spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, who you have defied! Today, all the world will know that there is a God in Israel!"

Imagine David at that moment spiking his slingshot on the ground (like a gridiron star spikes a football after a touchdown); he proceeds to give a victory dance, holding his fists in the air like he had just conquered the world. And then imagine hundreds of Jewish soldiers swarming David and hoisting him up on their shoulders - chanting - while Goliath peers on in bewildered contempt: "David, David, he's our man! He yelled at their champion!"

Of course, David's premature exaltation, coupled with the shouts of praise from his fellow soldiers, would be ludicrous. Goliath would still be alive, mocking God, taunting His army, armed and ready to wreak havoc on the people of God.

That, my dear friend, is an illustration of what we have at this moment regarding defunding Planned Parenthood.

The Pence amendment to defund Planned Parenthood (and other pro-life amendments) in the continuing resolution was like David taking the field and yelling. It was not the fight; it was the pregame show. The real fight must happen now, since the Senate has again rejected the Pence amendment.

The real proof of mettle and valor and commitment to life in the House is RIGHT NOW. Remember, the Senate and the President cannot force the House to spend money. The House is in the drivers seat.

We keep hearing the phrase: "This is non-negotiable." I agree. So, this is how that would play out. The House can tell the Senate, "Defunding Planned Parenthood is non-negotiable. Period." They have the Constitutional authority to do so; and they certainly have the moral imperative to do so. Whether or not they have the political will and courage to defend babies and defund Planned Parenthood remains to be seen; but as of right now, we have not had a victory.

Pro-life congressmen in the House can be equally clear to the House Leadership: 'Defunding Planned Parenthood and child-killing in Obamacare is non-negotiable. Period. We will vote against any final continuing resolution that funds Planned Parenthood; we will not cave in to the hissing of PP, the fear of bad press, the taunts of Senate Democrats, or even our own misguided Leadership on this point."

The duty of pro-life voters is equally clear: we must tell the pro-life members of the House that they must vote against any continuing resolution that restores funding to this Goliath. This is "non-negotiable". That means that we - pro-lifers - cannot give these "pro-life" House members a "pass" if they fail in their duty; we cannot go along with the ruse that if they fail it is because "the Senate wouldn't go along with them." If we lose, it will be because those in the House that say they are pro-life failed in their duty.

If pro-life House Members fail in their duty to the babies, and vote for money to go to Planned Parenthood and child-killing in Obamacare, then they will have sided with child killing members of the House and with PP itself, not with the babies. In the next election, we must be deal with them as those who have betrayed their sacred duty to God, the babies, and to us. That is what "non-negotiable" means.

Tragically, the pro-life movement is sending mixed messages. Pro-life press releases are being sent out praising the Republicans who voted for the Pence amendment in the House (before the Senate Vote); bus trips are happening, thanking and praising those who have "walked out on the field" - as if they had actually "slain Goliath." We are prematurely hoisting to our shoulders and lionizing those who have spiked their sling-shot, but have not prevailed in battle. Meanwhile, Goliath is still taunting them.and us.

At this critical moment, we must contact the pro-life members of the House, and urge them to follow Chris Smith's lead. Congressman Smith informed the House Leadership that he will not vote for any continuing resolution unless it has all the pro-life amendments that passed in the House still in place. That, my pro-life friend, is what "non-negotiable" means.

Let us pray - and fight politically - to insure that Goliath actually falls. Anything less is defeat.

My advice is this: For all who can, hold a press conference in front of the home office of your House member in your area. Do it this weekend, or on Monday or Tuesday, before the next vote.
