WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - The U.S. House of Representatives passed the historic Health Care Reform by a vote of 219 to 212 with no Republican support and 34 Democrats voting against the bill.
Supporters of the bill claim that this reform will extend health care to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and cracking down on insurance company abuses.
In a fiery speech Minority Leader John Boehner (R,OH) charged, "We have failed to listen to America."
As the final speaker during debate, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi cited strong support for the bill among the nation´s citizens including organizations such as the Catholic Health Association. "We will be joining those who established Social Security, Medicare," Pelosi stated, "and now, tonight, health care for all Americans."
Following passage, a motion to recommit was offered by pro-life Republicans, who cited the deficiencies in an Executive Order concerning a ban on abortion funding. The motion failed One of those who objected to the motion was Rep. Bart Stupak who had previously argued against the pro-abortion language in the legislation.
The president is expected to sign the bill no later than Tuesday.
