Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) -- Following the evil action in the US Senate of "tabling" the Pro-Life Amendment to the Health Care Reform Bill, Catholic Bishops are speaking out. Make no mistake, the tabling of this pro-Life amendment ensures that if this version of the Health Care Reform Bill is signed by President Obama Federal funds will be used to kill children in the womb.
It would be called "Health Care" when, at least that portion of it used for abortion, would actually be infanticide. Imagine if "Health Care" in the United States of America included payment for killing two year olds at the request of one of their parents, with tax dollars! There is no moral difference. We routinely operate on our neighbors in the womb now and return them to their first home until they are ready for birth. Science confirms what the Natural Law, written on every human heart, long ago told us all - every procured abortion is the intentional killing of innocent children. We all began our life in the same place, our mother's womb. Thank God we were not killed in the name of what is now called "choice".
Francis Cardinal George is a true friend of all of the poor, including children in the womb. In that he stands head and shoulders above the frauds who call themselves "liberals" in the Senate these days. They are the ones who have never seen an abortion they would not support. He spoke out very quickly upon the news of this egregious action of the US Senate. Those who blessed "Mother" Teresa called the "poorest of the poor", children in the first home of their mother's womb, have been the victims of a war on the womb for decades now. They are killed by surgical strikes and chemical weapons in a protracted injustice tantamount to genocide. It is called a "choice" and protected by the positive "law" while it violates the Natural Law. It is a war crime.
As a result of several unconstitutional opinions of the highest Court of the land in the United States this infanticide is now enforced by the Police Power of the State! Yes, I said unconstitutional. I am a constitutional lawyer and the decisions in Roe and Doe do not interpret the US Constitution, they ignore its clear committment to the fundamental and inalienable right to life. Furthermore, those Senators who support abortion on demand (like Barbara Boxer whose evil act tabled the Nelson Amendment) are the real War "Hawks" in our Nation. They want to fund - with our tax dollars- surgical strikes by forceps - and the use of chemical weapons - in an act of undeclared war against an entire group of our neighbors, children in the womb.
Cardinal George said, "The Senate vote to table the Nelson-Hatch-Casey amendment is a grave mistake and a serious blow to genuine health care reform....The Senate is ignoring the promise made by President Obama and the will of the American people in failing to incorporate longstanding prohibitions on federal funding for abortion and plans that include abortion." Cardinal George is the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Of course, he is right. God Bless him for having the courage to stand up.
Bishop William Murphy is a good man who leads the Diocese of Rockville Centre in New York. He is the Chair of the bishops' Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development. He said: "Congress needs to retain existing abortion funding restrictions and safeguard conscience protections because the nation urgently needs health care reform that protects the life, dignity, conscience and health of all. We will continue to work with Senators, Representatives and the Administration to achieve reform which meets these criteria. We hope the Senate will address the legislation's fundamental flaw on abortion and remedy its serious problems related to conscience rights, affordability and treatment of immigrants." He is right and God Bless him for standing firm!
Daniel Cardinal DiNardo of the Archdiocese of Galveston - Houston is the Chair of the bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities. He said: "Congress needs to separate facts and truth from political rhetoric on abortion funding. Even our opponents claim they do not support federal funding for elective abortions and they want current restrictions to apply. The way to settle this often misleading debate is simply, clearly and explicitly to apply Hyde restrictions to all the federal funds in the legislation. That is what the House did and what the final bill must do. The Senate should not approve this bill in its current form." He is absolutely right. He is a faithful and courageous Cardinal of the Catholic Church. The Church founded upon the Author of Life, Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, who lived for nine months in a womb while He was saving the entire world.
Some of my colleagues with whom I have stood for decades in this fundamental human rights struggle - the struggle to defend the Right to Life of all human persons from conception throughout all of life and unto natural death - have expended a lot of energy claiming that the Bishops have not done enough. Yet, these good men have done what Bishops of the Catholic Church should do. They are Shepherds, Pastors of souls. Thank God for their efforts to influence the Congress concerning this literal life and death struggle. They have faced the hostility of a what John Paul II called a "Tyrant State". With this obsession with now funding abortions with tax dollars, our civil leaders are plunging us into the abyss of barbarism. How many leaders of other Christian communities have had the courage to stand against this barbarism of this State?
Cardinal George expressed the theological virtue of hope which befits a Prince of the Church when he said: "While we deplore the Senate's refusal to adopt the Nelson-Hatch-Casey amendment, we remain hopeful that the protections overwhelmingly passed by the House will be incorporated into needed reform legislation. Failure to exclude abortion funding will turn allies into adversaries and require us and others to oppose this bill because it abandons both principle and precedent."
It is not the role of the Bishops to enter into the trenches to stop the evil of State sponsored child killing. It is the role of the lay faithful. Assisted by Clergy like me, a Catholic Deacon who is called to the ministry of authentic Social Justice, it is time for a New Catholic Action to be birthed. It must be genuinely Catholic, truly embracing the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church. Abortion is State sanctioned child killing. It must end. Oh, I know, some will think me "unseemly" for saying this. They will call me "extreme" for using that awful term. However, that is what abortion really truly is, child killing. Frankly I am tired of those who waste our time attacking the Bishops and generate Email lists for fundraising and, even unintentionally, end up hurting our Church. I say it is time for a new generation of men like Thomas More - and women like Catherine of Sienna - to emerge from among the lay faithful to take their place in the front line of this struggle to defend the right to life.
We are headed into an election year in the United States of America. Our Christian mission is not to get behind those who call for a "conservative" revolution. We are not called to form a "conservative underground". We are called to build a new catacombs. The catacombs is that place where we Christians worship together, plan and then, filled with the Power of the Holy Spirit, emerge to transform cultures of death into cultures of life. We have been here before. Our mission is to be Christians, first, last and everywhere in between! We Christians are the ones who have always insisted upon the recognition of the dignity of every human life from the moment of conception throughout all of life up to and including a natural death. As a result, we have transformed entire Nations. We will do so once again in the Third Christian Millennium.
We must reject the nihilism and utilitarianism of an age seduced by the siren song of materialism and hedonism. We must offer another way, the way of the human person created in the Image of God and endowed with fundamental human rights. This is the way of a true humanism which insists that freedom is a good of the human person and that the role of government, beyond the government of the family, is to recognize, protect, and build upon the foundation secured by those rights. We insist that marriage - and the family founded upon it - is the first society and that any truly just society will not only recognize this but always defer to the family as the smallest possible vehicle of governance. Christians are not anti-government. We want "good" government.
We must stand up to the tyrants who claim that killing children is a "right" when it is always and everywhere wrong. That includes women like Cecile Richards, the President of Planned Parenthood, who peddles abortion as a "solution" when it is child killing. Their web site proclaims, "Planned Parenthood condemns the adoption of the Stupak/Pitts amendment in HR 3962.... This amendment is an unacceptable addition to the health care reform bill that, if enacted, would result in women losing health benefits they have today. Simply put, the Stupak/Pitts amendment would restrict women's access to abortion coverage in the private health insurance market, undermining the ability of women to purchase private health plans that cover abortion, even if they pay for most of the premiums with their own money."
Health Benefits? Every procured abortion kills a living human person. Killing someone else is never a health benefit, it is a crime. It is killing some-one whom we should welcome as our neighbor. Ms. Richards, your time of fraudulently deceiving our Nation is over! It is our time now, the time of the new champions of life and human dignity.
We should thank the U.S. Catholic Bishops for their courage. We should speak well of them. We should promise our prayer and our fidelity to them ...and to the Church which they serve. Then we should use every resource we have to build a resistance movement for life, family and freedom. It is time to build a new Catholic Action which has as its goal the building of a new culture of life and civilization of love.
