WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) - In a race that proved to be much closer than most had anticipated, incumbent Michael Bloomberg has been returned for a third term as Mayor of New York City. He was expected to cruise to an easy victory but did pull out a 50 to 46 percent margin over his challenger, City Comptroller William Thompson Jr.

Part of the surprise came from the fact that Thompson received little help from the Democratic White House or other voices in his big to upset the momentum Bloomberg had been building.

The unprecedented third term by the Mayor was made possible as Bloomberg called upon the City Council to authorize the action.
