WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) - We present the daily update received from Democrats for Life confirming the worst. They have courageously led efforts to ensure that the funding for the taking of innocent human lives would NOT be included in this Health Care Reform. Now, they are sounding the alarm. Here are their reports on the House and the Senate versions, received this morning:
"ENERGY & COMMERCE HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL STILL ALLOWS TAX PAYER FUNDED ABORTIONS
"A handful of Blue Dog Democrats who were stopping the Energy & Commerce Committee's version of Health Care Reform in the House, gave in and said they would support the bill coming out of committee.
"While they claim that their fiscal concerns were satisfied, taxpayer funded abortions still remains. The Committee approved the legislation Friday but tax payer funded abortions will remain in the bill. DFLA will work overtime to make sure that an amendment to strike out the taxpayer funded abortions will be successful when the bill is voted on by the full House of Representatives.
"TAXPAYER FUNDED ABORTIONS ALLOWED IN NEW SENATE BILL
"U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), the Senate Majority Whip removed language from a Senate bill that would have prevented taxpayer funding of abortions for Federal workers.
"The Senate Financial Services Appropriations bill, S. 1432, would have Americans fund abortions for employees of the Federal government. DFLA is concerned that without this language, it will result private health plans being required to cover elective abortion, and massive new federal subsidies for such coverage.
"When Congress adopts the funding bill each year that covers the health insurance plan for federal workers, it has included an amendment to stop tax-funding of abortions. A search of the new bill that Durbin's panel crafted finds the Smith Amendment prohibiting taxpayer-subsidized abortions through the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) has been deleted. DFLA is working with Senators to oppose taxpayer funding of abortions for federal employees before any vote in committee or on the Senate floor.
