CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - I have written before about the strategic efforts of some (not all) within the homosexual community to undermine true marriage. This effort is now being called the "Marriage Equality" and "Freedom to Marry" movement by its advocates and apologists. How clever this verbal slight of hand! The argument has been shifted, or so its proponents hope. Now, those who defend true marriage are being cast as somehow denying homosexual paramours some "right" to do what they are incapable of doing, be married and parent children.
I have written about the efforts of Judges who wrongly use the authority of their office to advance this Cultural Revolution. I have called them the "new alchemists", so taken with their own sense of power that they think they can actually change the structure of reality by Judicial Fiat. Well, their numbers are increasing and they are threatening the very separation of powers which has served this country so well. Even now, in California, the State Supreme Court is poised to possibly overturn the will of the people of California who voted to defend true marriage.
In a recent editorial I wrote,"Homosexual sexual acts, even if engaged in with one partner for a long time, can never be the equivalent of true marriage. In addition, efforts of some within the homosexual movement to equate how one engages in non-marital sexual practices with a member of the same sex with being a member of a particular race, or gender for civil rights purposes is legally wrong.Disordered appetites - and the actions engaged in by those who give into them - cannot be called civil rights. Homosexual sexual acts are simply homosexual sexual acts. Our bodies do not lie, they speak the language written within their constitution and confirmed in the Natural Law which binds us all. Marriage - and the family founded upon it - is not an antiquated institution but paves the path to the future. Any efforts to use the Police Power of the State to force all citizens to give the same legal status to homosexual paramours and true marriage do not serve the common good."
These comments led one homosexual activist to respond,"Deacon Keith Fournier you are an under-evolved societal retard. But don't worry. Progressive thinking will sweep you, and all those like you, away." It is interesting that he did not engage my positions. Rather, he resorted to personal attacks. I do not share his assessment of my place on his evolutionary cycle. I find his use of derogatory language used to insult our neighbors who are learning disabled offensive. I absolutely reject the claim that people who want to eliminate true marriage are the "progressives' of the age.
Those who oppose true marriage - and that is precisely what the so called "Marriage Equality" or "Freedom to Marry" movement actually does - are the ones who want to turn the clock back and impede progress. They are Regressives not Progressives. The foundation for the real progress made in Western civilization is the first society of the family which is founded upon authentic marriage between one man and one woman. It is the first government, first economy, first school, first religious institution and first mediating institution.
Marriage has been given a privileged and protected legal and social status for a good reason, it serves the common good. It is the primary civilizing institution, constituted for the bearing and caring of children in an environment wherein they can best be nurtured, loved, socialized, schooled in the virtues and prepared for life in broader communities. Marriage has long been accepted in the West as having been revealed by the Natural Law. It grounds our organizing vision of the broader society and informs our philosophy of governance, including the proper place of the principle of subsidiarity, deferring to the family.
We are in the midst of an orchestrated campaign to effectuate a radical change in our social order by eliminating the protected and preferred status given to true marriage. It is being done with verbal sophistication by some who claim to be concerned about "rights" and "freedom" but who really seek to undermine both. One advocacy group called the "Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders" (GLAD) recently announced what they are calling their "Six by Twelve" Campaign.Ironically, they announced this initiative when they received the "Social Innovation Award" from Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Making the relationship between homosexual paramours the equivalent of a marriage is certainly a "Social Innovation" and a dangerous one at that. The award was given in December on the anniversary of the horrible "Goodridge" decision rendered by the Massachusetts Supreme Court. GLAD will collaborate with other groups and attempt to force six more States in new England to jettison true marriage and substitute a State enforced legal equivalency between homosexual paramours and married couples.
With wind in their sails from the "Goodridge" decision, GLAD used the Connecticut Supreme Court as a further tool in their revolutionary effort last October. They brought the litigation which led to the horrible decision of "Kerrigan & Mock v. Department of Public Health". GLAD's Executive Director Lee Swislow recently stated, "We can make New England a 'marriage-equality' zone by strategically combining existing legal, electoral and on-the-ground know-how to fast-track (homosexual) marriage in every New England state. By 2012, we not only can have 'marriage equality' throughout New England, we can have a road map for the rest of the country."
What these new Cultural Revolutionaries did not expect was the strong resistance of a broad based coalition of Californians who defended True Marriage through the passage of "Proposition 8". This kind of truly progressive movement to defend marriage and protect the common good is growing in strength throughout the rest of the United States. The defenders of true marriage come from every political party and cross over racial and socio-economic lines. They know that true marriage - and the family founded upon it - is not some kind of social construct we simply made up or some outdated artifact of the past. It is the path to a future of true freedom for all and the foundation of a healthy and human society.
In his now famous Novel 1984, George Orwell warned of what he called "Newspeak", a new vocabulary which was intended to eliminate dissent and pave the way to people being accused of "Thoughtcrime" if they opposed the regime. One of the characters in the book described it this way, "Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?"
We must absolutely refuse to use to accept the language being developed by these "Marriage Equivalency" and "Freedom to Marry" cultural revolutionaries. My detractor told me "Progressive thinking will sweep you, and all those like you, away". He is wrong. Progressive thinking will defend marriage and the family and society which are founded on it. We must aggressively expose and oppose the efforts of the New Cultural revolutionaries to paint us as remnants of the past, somehow impeding "progress" or narrow minded "bigots" opposing freedom. Those who defend True Marriage and the family founded upon it are the true Progressives of this age and the real freedom fighters.
Get ready for the new assault on marriage in New England!
