ATLANTA, Ga. (Catholic Online) - In what was being hailed as a "firewall" victory because it presumably prevents the new Senate from achieving a 60 seat filibuster - proof Democratic majority, Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia won his re-election bid in a closely watched run off election against Democrat Jim Martin.

When the final tally is certified results will be known conclusively, but it appears that Chambliss won handily. The turnout was light according to poll watchers.

Chambliss ran on the worry among his supporters that not electing him might lead to a loss of Republican ability to challenge the overwhelmingly Democratic Congress which will soon take their seats.

However, when the issues are considered, the Party lines may not be as determinative any longer on the National scene.

The Republican Senator angered some of his supporters when he favored both the $700 billion dollar "bail out" of the Financial Sector as well as the guest worker provision of the recent Bush immigration initiatives.

The only unresolved Senate seat is now in Minnesota where the recount continues.

Chambliss brought in National Republican leaders, including Senator John McCain and his former running mate, Governor Sarah Palin.

Martin did the same, having the Obama political machine behind him and bringing heavy hitters like Al Gore and former President Bill Clinton come to the State.

In the end, it appeared to be a "local election". With only 18-20% of the electorate showing up at the polls for the recount, Georgia stayed in the reliably Republican column.
