Boring Debate Will Have No Effect on Presidential Race

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - The Drudge Report captured the essence of tonight's second Presidential debate held in Nashville, Tennessee at Belmont University, with its short but accurate headline, "BORING".
The debate was moderated by Tom Brokaw who continually attempted to hold the participants to what were supposed to be agreements made by both of them to time allotted and limiting their responses. He failed miserably.
The so called "Town Hall" format which was supposed to favor John McCain, seemed to favor neither of them. Frankly, they both seemed comfortable but the format seemed so rehearsed that it had little of the expected spontaneity.
The efforts to elicit questions from ordinary citizens which was supposed to help facilitate a look at each candidate from a kind of "person on the street" perspective fell flat.
Instead, the moderator asked more questions than the audience on matters of interest to him, such as who the candidates might choose for Treasury Secretary and whether they both had a "doctrine" on the use of military force.
The questions were "inside the beltway" in their emphasis and the responses elicted more of the same.
Of course, as most observers pointed out throughout the day, the momentum of this race seems to have shifted in the direction of Barack Obama. Therefore, all eyes were on Senator McCain to spark some kind of renewed interest in his campaign.
That must have been his intention with his proposal, offered in the early moments of the evening, that if elected he would to order the Treasury to buy up home mortgages and renegotiate them to reflect the diminished value of the asset in order to keep Americans in their homes.
The proposal, though interesting, certainly requires further elaboration by the candidate. However, it did not have the dramatic effect it was apparently intended to.
The entire evening involved a boring back and forth posturing between two unimpressive candidates as they laid out their views on energy policy, their approaches to fixing the economic crisis and their positions on foreign policy.
Nothing new emerged and I imagine that many Americans were disappointed. Both men tried to accuse the other of bearing responsibility for the current economic crisis but neither really seemed to make it work.
All in all, the anticipated great debate in Nashville was "Boring".
