CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - The scene was stunning. What appeared to be handwritten signs bearing the phrase "Palin Power" multiplied throughout the Xcel Energy Center as the moment of the acceptance speech finally arrived.

First came the warm ups from Senator McCain's former rivals, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuiliani. Then "Palin Power" became the appropriate slogan for the evening as Governor Sarah Palin lit up the house with her confidence, moved hearts with the warm appeal of her very real and photogenic family and roused the ground troops of the revived Republican Party with a well delivered, substantive and electrifying speech.

This was Sarah's night and the delegates to this convention let it be known with continual applause from the beginning, throughout the delivery and at the end. The speech was personal, punchy, populist and patriotic. It was delivered by Governor Palin with a confident demeanor which confirms that she is a candidate who can and will hold her own in any debate. It was also a joy to listen to, indicating that she will make a significant contribution in the communications department of the Republican ticket this year.

She began: "Mr. Chairman, delegates, and fellow citizens: I am honored to be considered for the nomination for Vice President of the United States... I accept the call to help our nominee for president to serve and defend America. I accept the challenge of a tough fight in this election... against confident opponents ... at a crucial hour for our country. And I accept the privilege of serving with a man who has come through much harder missions ... and met far graver challenges ... and knows how tough fights are won - the next president of the United States, John S. McCain."

The early part of the speech was intended to paint a picture of this unique candidate, the first Female Vice presidential nominee of the Republican Party in American history. A woman Governor from the State of Alaska, she was a relative unknown to many Americans and a surprise choice to the pundit class. However, Sarah Palin owned the night. No matter the outcome of the race, she has now become a household name. She painted an inspiring self portrait of a down to earth, plain spoken, sincere and dedicated wife, mother, daughter, and gifted public servant. She also acknowledged "I'm not a member of the permanent political establishment" as she came out swinging, fighting back against the almost unceasing efforts of the pundit class over the last few days to undermine her integrity, disparage her family, question her ability and contest her qualifications. All of that occurred in the few days between the announcement of her selection by Senator McCain and her ability to formally accept Wednesday evening.

Sarah Palin won the night, displaying what we use to call "Moxie", a fighting spirit. This all points to what will surely be a hard fought and interesting Fall General Election campaign. This candidate is ready to take on anything thrown her way. In one of several humorous moments, this self professed "hockey mom" noted, "The difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick", as she smiled through her own lipstick and received the continual rounds of applause from her admiring listeners. Clearly this was Sarah Palin's night and she lit up that Xcel Energy Center with her own energy.
