WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - Hillary Rodham Clinton stood before a packed house at the National Buidling Museum in Washington D.C. on Saturday afternoon and officially withdrew from the race for the Democratic Party's nomination for president. In her confirmation that the campaign had come to an end, she encouraged her supporters to put all their energy and passion toward Barack Obama becoming the next president of the United States.
"Today, as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him," Clinton told the enthusiastic crowd.
"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States."
Clinton was joined on the platform by her husband and daughter, as she ended what has been the most successful bid for the White House attempted by any woman in history.
While Barack Obama will not officially be endorsed as the nominee until the Democratic National Convention in late August, the campaign really begins now. After one of the most vigorous and lengthy battles for a party nomination, Obama is facing a Republican contender who has already begun his national run in earnest.
