WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - In an historic moment in American history, Senator Barack Obama, the first term Senator from the State of Abraham Lincoln, has secured all of the delegates necessary to become the standard bearer of the Democratic Party in the general election for President.
Senator Obama is the first African American to become the nominee for either major Party in U.S. history.
The campaign between the now presumptive Democratic nominee, Barack Obama, and Senator Hillary Clinton was intense, unpredictable, unexpectedly long and volatile.
In the beginning of the Primary season, Senator Obama was a virtual unknown and an underdog candidate.
No one making any respectable Political predictions expected that he could have contended with Senator Hillary Clinton, former First Lady, respected Senator from New York, and a part of a Democratic Political family dynasty. She was well ahead in every Poll. The talk in the pundit class was of the "inevitability" of Hillary Clinton securing the Democratic nomination.
This hotly contested Democratic Primary race captivated not only America's attention but the world's attention as well. The historic result was clearly beyond anyone's expectations when this 17 month Primary race began.
Now, as the Nation awaits the final votes from the remaining two Primaries in Montana and South Dakota, those results have become almost irrelevant.
Senator Barack Obama now has the necessary delegates to secure the Democratic Party nomination for the Presidency of the United States.
In a surprise turn of events, Senator Hillary Clinton pulled a final surprise. After routinely rejecting any possibility of serving as Vice President if Barack Obama secured the nomination, she let it be known in a telephone conference with fellow New York politicians that she is "open to it".
After the final 31 delegates from these last two primaries are divided, indications are that Senator Clinton, though conceding, will acknowledge that Senator Obama has secured the necessary number of delegates.
The victor will hold a large rally at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota where the Republicans will hold their own nominating convention on September 1- 4. There they will formally nominate the now presumptive nominee of their Party, Senator John McCain.
The venue was chosen to make a statement that the Democratic standard beaerer will seek to attract voters from across party lines. The attendance is expected to be massive and the response enthusiastic. Even those who disagree with the candidate cannot but be amazed at the historic dimension of the moment.
The speech is calculated to be the first salvo in the coming General Election.
It is reported that the now presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party will be introduced by a Republican who will maintain that she and others like her have heard his message of change.
As this Primary season ends, the General Election promises to equally as riveting.
