Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) - At a Press conference held in South Dakota on Saturday Senator Barack Obama confirmed that he, his wife and their family have resigned their membership in Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
The announcement came only moments after the Rules Committee for the Democratic Party had reached a compromise on the controversial issues surrounding the seating of delegates from Michigan and Florida.
The Presidential candidate indicated that the decision to resign his membership in the Church had been a matter of discussion between he, his wife and the Pastor for sometime. He expressed sorrow associated with leaving a Church to which they had belonged for twenty years.
He confirmed that the separation from membership in the Church was accomplished by way of a letter sent to the new Pastor.
In both his remarks and his responses to the questions from reporters afterwards, the Senator affirmed that he, his wife Michelle and their family will find another Church community where they can practice their Christian faith.
Senator Obama reiterated his serious disagreement with remarks made by the former Pastor of Trinity, Jeremiah Wright, at the National Press Club. He indicated that that since that appearance and those remarks, he and his wife Michelle knew that they would have to leave the congregation. They felt that such a separation would be for their own good and the good of the Church and its new Pastor.
He also made reference to the offensive remarks made this past week at the Church by a visiting Catholic Priest, Father Michael Pfleger. He strongly disagreed with those remarks and noted them as one more reason why his decision to leave Trinity was necessary.
