Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - "Tonight, in the fullness of spring, with the help of those who stood up from Portland to Louisville, we have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people and you have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for president of the United States of America," Senator Barack Obama told a roaring crowd of his enthusiastic supporters in Des Mines Iowa.
The Senator from Illinois returned to Iowa on the night of his expected Oregon win, to make a symbolic statement.
With the Oregon win, the candidate has surpassed his feisty opponent, Hillary Clinton, in earned or pledged delegates.
In an unpredictable election where the line in the sand has been continually redrawn, that once was the mark where the Primary race was predicted by pundits to end.
That is no longer the case.
However, the inevitable is in the air in the Obama camp and the candidate gave a speech filled with the themes of change which have fueled his campaign.
He also gave glowing tributes to his resilient opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton who, on this same night, had secured her own victory in the Primary race in Kentucky.
In the wake of that win, Clinton has pledged to fight on and is seeking a path to the nomination through securing so called "Super-delegates" who are not pledged and can make their own decisions in the eleventh hour.
She is also literally banking on a resolution of the looming dispute over whether to seat the delegates in Michigan and Ohio, with reports indicating that her underdog campaign is carrying a staggering debt.
Both candidates head for Florida today.
