WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - Geraldine Ferraro, who made history as the first woman nominated as a Vice-Presidential candidate in 1984, made headlines again with comments about Barack Obama.

A fundraiser for the Clinton campaign, Ferraro stated last Friday that the only reason Obama has been successful in his presidential campaign is because he is black.

The Daily Breeze of Torrance, California reported last Friday that Ferraro had told them, "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

When asked about comments made by her fundraiser, Hillary Clinton stated, "I do not agree with that. It's regrettable that any of our supporters - on both sides, because we both have this experience - say things that kind of veer off into the personal. We ought to keep this on the issues.".

Harry Smith asked Barack Obama about Ferraro's comments on CBS' Early Show this morning.

"Obviously, I strongly disagree with her comments," Obama stated. "I think if you think about the history of this country, the notion that being a black American named Barack Obama paves the way for the presidency doesn't, I think, ring true with most Americans."

A former congresswoman from New York, Ferraro was Walter Mondale's running mate in 1984. She endorsed Clinton early and began work raising money for the campaign as well as serving on the campaign's finance committee.
