LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - In a Democratic primary campaign which will most certainly now go to the convention, the Senator from Illinois Barack Obama has the lead in delegates over the Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton, 1,368-1,226.
After Tuesday's victory, that lead will grow.
The voters of Mississippi gave Senator Barack Obama a decisive victory over Senator Hillary Clinton. Close to almost 25% more voters expressed their desire to have him as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States.
Since this Democratic race is so close, the almost 800 elected officials and party leaders called "Super-delegates" may actually decide it at the convention. If so, currently it is Senator Clinton who seems to hold the lead in what may become the surprise weapon, the "Super-delegates", 247-211.
However, the State of Mississippi held its primary on Tuesday. At stake were 33 delegates. The race was covered all day long and, as has become the norm in this primary campaign, it kept the attention of the American public.
The Wednesday morning news was filled with prognostications and the endless parsing of the votes like tea leaves. In a strange twist of irony, some of the same "experts" who noted Obama's strength among white voters just a few primary votes past are now speculating that he is no longer attracting them. They base this on on the statistics in Mississippi.
However, no one has yet raised the question of whether there may be a difference between a State like Mississippi and States like Wyoming, Maine, Washington, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, Alaska, Illinois, Idaho and Utah where he clearly did attract white voters. Of course, no one dares to mention that Mississippi is a Southern State.
The interest in this hotly contested Democratic contest does not seem to be abating.
However, there is no doubt that Mississippi belonged to Barack Obama, by almost 25 percentage points.
The charismatic candidate with one of the greatest rhetorical gifts in contemporary political history won one more in an impressive string of victories. The only question remaining is how the coveted delegates will be apportioned.
Under Democratic primary Rules, every State apportions delegates.Senator Obama received 19 delegates and Senator Clinton received 14.
So, the horserace continues, on the Democratic side.
Perhaps the most intriguing development in this race is the lingering debate over the Florida and Michigan primaries. Party officials "punished' the residents of those States for moving their primaries up. Thus, their vote was not allowed to produce any delegates.
Now, the momentum is growing for a "redo" wherein the Primaries will actually be held again. The questions which still have to be answered is who will foot the bill and how the voting would occur.
This Democratic primary race will certainly go down in election history.
