WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - "Tonight we won three out of four contests and began a new chapter in this historical campaign."
With those words to reporters, Hillary Clinton summed up the new energy she felt following her strong showing in the Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island primaries.
The race for Texas and Ohio delegates were both must-win scenarios for the New York Senator, who had not won a primary in the last eleven contests. A shake-up in her senior campaign staff and intense attacks on her opponent have been credited for the shift in momentum.
After gaining Ohio, Clinton told a large crowd of supporters in Columbus, "As Ohio goes, so goes the nation. Well, this nation's coming back and so is this campaign."
Speaking from San Antonio, Texas, Barack Obama did not concede any change in the lead no matter the outcome, "No matter what happens tonight, we have nearly the same delegate lead as we did this morning, and we are on our way to winning this nomination."
In an email to supporters early Wednesday morning, Obama affirmed his commitment to keep up his momentum. "We knew that the closer we got to the change we seek, the more we'd see of the politics we're trying to end -- the attacks and distortions that try to distract us from the issues that matter to people's lives, the stunts and the tactics that ask us to fear instead of hope. But this time -- this year -- it will not work. The challenges are too great. The stakes are too high."
Texas Democrats not only hold a primary but also hold caucuses in the evening, where one-third of its delegates are awarded. Participants in the Texas caucus must show proof of having voted in the earlier primary. In this confusing process, Obama leads in the Texas caucus, where Clinton drew strong popular vote support among Hispanics and white females.
Exit polls in Ohio indicate that she drew support particularly among working class white men and women based on her strong appeal for economic solutions.
Clinton also hinted that she will probably battle for the delegates from Florida and Michigan where she won in disqualified primaries. "We've won Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, Arkansas, California, New York, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and today we won Rhode Island."
No Democrats even campaigned in Florida and Michigan only had one name on the ballot - hers.
The next seven weeks will be grueling for the both candidates. With only three contests at stake, they will have to expend a great deal of energy in the primary process, which will climax in Pennsylvania on April 22.
