LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - Introduced by popular conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham as the "Conservatives Conservative", the former Governor of Massachusetts entered a packed, standing room only crowd of conservatives who had gathered at the Conservative political Action Conference (CPAC).
He began this speech slowly, deliberately, noting, "...more than 4 million have given me their vote, 4.7 for Senator McCain.... I won 11 States, Senator McCain 13...but he is doing better in delegates."
Then, he gave a broad brush stroke speech, moving between social issues, to economic issues to military issues, with some moments of inspiration.
He warned of the attack on the American culture saying "Unless America changes course, we could become the France of this century.... still a great Nation, but not the leader."
In an articulate, gracious but somewhat disjointed speech, Romney touched every area of concern that the conservatives gathered were waiting to hear about.
He warned of the growth of "entitlement" programs saying that "dependency is death to initiative... it is like a drug, we must fight it like the poison it is".
He warned of the growing attacks on marriage and the decline of the American family, telling a cheering crowd, "A Nation built on the principles of the Founding fathers cannot long stand when its children are raised without fathers in the home."
He addressed all "three legs" of what has come to be called the "Conservatives Conservative" stool, social concerns, conservative economic principles and foreign policy. He sounded like a man who knew what the crowd was waiting to hear and he delivered.
Then, he got to the main point, noting that "...soon the face of liberalism will have a new name, whether Barack or Hilary, the results will be the same..."
The results to Romney would be a withdrawal from the battle with the looming threats caused by Islamic Jihadists. It was in this part of the speech that the passion of the candidate became clear.
He told a surprised crowd of supporters that he knew they wanted him to go all the way to the convention, like Ronald Reagan did in 1976. However, he told them, this was not 1976 because "...we are a Nation at War... in this time of War I simply cannot allow my campaign to be a part of surrender to terror."
He continued, "If this were only about me, I'd go on. But it's never been about me... I entered this campaign because I love America."
With that, Governor Mitt Romney suspended his campaign. Within minutes, the pundits began the spin. Why? What will it mean? What will happen to Governor Mike Huckabee?
What a campaign.
