LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - In what amounts to the first National primary in American history the "Super Tuesday" results are still being tabulated.

Order "Catholics and Voting", how a faithful Catholic must also be a faithful citizen

However, the day turned out to be a "Super Surprise".

Considering that this campaign had all but been declared over by the pundits and experts only months ago, Super Tuesday has proven that it is not the pundits or the experts who make those decisions, it is the American people.

They took the process seriously, showed up in large numbers and proved that the Democratic process is alive and well.

First, there is the surprising turn of events concerning that other Governor from Hope, Arkansas, Mike Huckabee; a political David who took on the Goliath of a Republican establishment.

This underfunded but intelligent and articulate candidate is the one whom the "experts" had repeatedly tried to marginalize.

They failed.

On this Super Tuesday he surprised all observers with a very, very strong showing. At the time of this report, Governor Huckabee has been declared the winner in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee and West Virginia.

In a buoyant speech to those supporters, the candidate said: "You know, over the past few days a lot of people have been trying to say that this is a two-man race. Well, you know what? It is.

And we're in it!

Tonight, we are making sure America understands that sometimes one small smooth stone is even more effective than a whole lot of armor. And we've also seen that the widow's mite has more effectiveness than all the gold in the world."

Later in the evening, the former Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, spoke to his supporters. Having presented himself as the "true conservative", Romney was very well funded and favored to do well.

Yet, on this Super Tuesday the candidate experienced what must have been a disappointing showing.

He encouraged his supporters by telling them that he was continuing in the race.

He told them: "Ann said to me: 'The one thing that's clear tonight is that nothing's clear ... but I think she's wrong. The one thing that's clear is, this campaign is going on."

At the time of this report he had secured victories in Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota Montana, North Dakota and Utah.

Finally, Senator John McCain addressed his supporters. This was a jubilant John McCain. He told the crowd "We are the Republican party frontrunner for the Presidency of the United States."

McCain secured victories in Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and California. What makes this even more surprising is that Senator John McCain had been all but declared unable to continue in the race only months ago.

However, the candidate showed the same true grit which characterized his years of military and public service. He stayed in the fight and he won the night.

In hearing what has become the most popular chant of his supporters, he smiled approvingly to the words "Mac is back."

And, it appears that after the results are finally tabulated for this Super Tuesday, Mac really is back.

As the Republican front runner.
