LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - On his Twitter account, U.S. President Donald Trump accused former president Barack Obama of wire tapping Trump Tower.
"Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!"
Shortly after, he tweeted, "Is it legal for a sitting President to be 'wire tapping' a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!"
Then, "I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!" and "How low has President Obama gone to tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate Bad (or sick) guy!"
Senior U.S. officials who spoke under the cover of anonymity, told the Washington Post there was no wiretap.
Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for Obama, released the statement: "A cardinal rule of the Obama Administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice. As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false."
Senior officials reported White House Counsel Donald McGahn and his office continue inquiries into the possible surveillance and White House press secretary Sean Spicer explained McGahn "is reviewing what options, if any, are available to us."
FBI and Justice Department officials declined to comment.
While the accusation is being taken seriously, some have decided to respond to Trump;s accusation by playing his own game - by using social media.
Ben Rhodes, previous national security adviser to Obama, tweeted: "No President can order a wiretap. Those restrictions were put in place to protect citizens from people like you."
The President's allegations created giant waves in political circles - but without evidence many question whether his public accusation was a wise one.
Senator Ben Sasse made a statement Saturday reading: "The President today made some very serious allegations, and the informed citizens that a republic requires deserve more information. If there were wiretaps of then-candidate Trump's organization or campaign, then it was either with FISA Court authorization or without such authorization.
"If without, the President should explain what sort of wiretap it was and how he knows this. It is possible that he was illegally tapped."
Sasse added if Trump's allegations were true, FISA court records would reveal the evidence.
"On the other hand," he continued, "if it was with a legal FISA Court order, then an application for surveillance exists that the Court found credible. The President should ask that this full application regarding surveillance of foreign operatives or operations be made available, ideally to the full public, and at a bare minimum to the U.S. Senate.
"We are in the midst of a civilization-warping crisis of public trust, and the President's allegations today demand the thorough and dispassionate attention of serious patriots. A quest for the full truth, rather than knee-jerking partisanship, must be our guide if we are going to rebuild civic trust and health."
Is Trump's allegation accurate? Does he have evidence? What made him suspect the wiretap? These, and hopefully many other, questions will be answered at the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
