LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - In February 1993, Abdel-Rahman was linked to an attack on the World Trade Center, which killed six and injured over 1,000 more.
Other suspects linked to his mosque, where he often taught hate and violence, were also arrested.
The attack occurred when a bomb exploded in a parking garage beneath 2 World Trade Center. Two years later, in October 1995, Abdul-Rahman was indicted for involvement in the World Trade Center bombing and other terrorist plots as well.
His sentence was life in prison.
Abdel-Rahman, also known as the "Blind Sheikh," claimed terrorism was a good thing, with one speech reading: "What kind of name is this? Why are we afraid of it? Why do we fear the word terrorist? If the terrorist is the person who struggles for the sake of God, then we are terrorists.
A 1993 photo of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind spiritual leader of Egypt's largest Islamic extremist fundamentalist group Jamaa Islamiyya (AFP).
"We...have been ordered with terrorism because we must prepare what power we can to terrorize the enemy of Allah and your enemy. The Koran says 'to strike terror.' Therefore, we don't fear to be described with 'terrorism.'...They may say, 'He is a terrorist, he uses violence, he uses force.' Let them say that. We are ordered to prepare whatever we can of power to terrorize the enemies of Islam ."
The terrorist leader inspired countless others to eventually conduct the 9/11 attacks, though he was spending his life in federal prison, his powerful speeches were often referenced and the damage he wrought continued until the creation of the terrorist organization known as ISIS.
Everything Abdel-Rahman stood for in his lifetime has brought nothing but death and hatred.
According to Greg Nortion, a spokesman with the federal correctional complex in Butner, North Carolina, Abdel-Rahman died of complications with diabetes and coronary heart disease.
He passed away Saturday, February 18th but his messages of hate continue to live on, reminding us all the importance of putting that down as well.
