LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Many are familiar with the term "black gold," meaning an oil strike begins as black oil but winds up as gold in the industry.
Texas is home to over 3,000 wells working to pump as much oil as possible.
The oil industry is synonymous with money - so when a big discovery is made, everyone in the industry knows times are good.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Wolfcamp shale in the Midland Basin portion of Texas' Permian Basin province is estimated to contain the largest continuous line of oil and gas in the entirety of the United States.
Walter Guidroz, the program coordinator for the USGS Energy Resources Program, explained: "The fact that this is the largest assessment of continuous oil we have ever done just goes to show that, even in areas that have produced billions of barrels of oil, there is still the potential to find billions more.
"Changes in technology and industry practices can have significant effects on what resources are technically recoverable, and that's why we continue to perform resource assessments throughout the United States and the world."
The USGS explained continuous oil and gas runs along geologic formations, rather than underground lakes or puddles.
With help from horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to get the most from continuous oil reserves, companies are now able to utilize more wells and collect more resources.
More resources mean more jobs and better job security for oil employees - certainly something worth celebrating.
