LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The design was created by a continuous line and features images of people from all walks of life, including Starbucks baristas.

Meant to serve as a symbol for "stitching people together as a united community," the cup has instead become the focal point of a ridiculous case of customer backlash.

Last year's minimalist red cups were also a point of controversy, with people going so far as to boycott the popular coffee chain.

According to the Huffington Post, many people have taken to Twitter to voice their complaints.

Many believe the color green is "less festive" than the traditional red cups and others take it a step further by claiming the design is political.

One Twitter comment, made by @RadioAnna, read: "@Starbucks Screw you. My coffee should NOT (and does NOT) come with political brainwashing. I dropped @Starbucks like a hot rock."

The ridiculous lengths people go over a cup while greater issues ensue around them unnoticed is both shameful and appalling.

It. Is. A. Cup.

There is absolutely no reason so many people should be calling a design geared toward unity "political brainwashing."

Comments such as these reveal more about the individual than they do about Starbucks and their choice of coffee cup designs.

Shocked by the laughable backlash, Starbucks chairman and CEO Howard Scultz released a statement reading: "The green cup and the design represent the connections Starbucks has as a community with its partners (employees) and customers.

"During a divisive time in our country, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other."

Meanwhile, those who can accept that sometimes a cup is just a cup have made comments regarding the overly-sensitive populace bent on having their voices heard to condemn the beautiful symbol the chain has provided.

One man, @tkylemac, wrote: "Imagine if people cared as much about protecting our planet as they do the design of the Starbucks annual Holiday cup."

@KatTimpf commented: Unless a Starbucks cup is A) Threatening to murder you & B) Somehow seems to have the ability to do so[,] Then some of you are overreacting."

The reason for the season has nothing to do with whether a coffee cup is red, green or lavender.

Nothing about unity is brainwashing people, is a negative political statement or any of the other silly things it is being accused of.

Last year Pope Francis called Christmas a "charade" as the "world continues to wage war [and] we do not understand peace."

Apparently, it would appear this Christmas will be full of unrest as well, with people do their best to find reasons to hate despite the beauty surrounding them.
