Why are social networks suppressing the Clinton FBI investigation?

Everybody is talking about Hillary Clinton's emails, except on social media.

In the first 24 hours following the stunning announcement the FBI was reopening its investigation into Hillary Clinton's email, the topic failed to trend on social media. This is in spite of everybody talking about it.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - A look at trending topics over the weekend provided a plethora of celebrity names and even hurricane Sandy, but no mention of Clinton or her emails. It seems strange, given how the reopened investigation has been the leading topic in the news cycle.

On Friday, FBI Director James Comey announced his agents found a massive cache of Clinton emails they have never seen before. The emails, which number possibly in the hundreds of thousands, were found on the computer of Anthony Weiner, a former disgraced politician who is under investigation for sexting a 15-year-old girl and other women.

Weiner's wife is Huma Abedin, the top aide to Hillary Clinton. Apparently used Weiner's computer to access her emails at some point. Alternatively, it is possible the computer never belonged to Weiner, and was put into his name to hide it from authorities investigating Hillary Clinton.

In any case, the emails now need to be reviewed. It is possible the emails are innocuous, or they could be very damaging. The Clinton camp is attempting to downplay the significance of the case while rumor suggests the campaign is facing a crisis. Huma Abedin has been left behind in New York by the Clinton campaign.

It is unclear how long it will take the FBI to complete their review process.

This story is perhaps the biggest one of the election so far. Clinton is in jeopardy once more of prosecution after escaping the first time around. The revelation could find that Clinton tried very hard to hide evidence from the FBI. Abedin and Clinton could both be charged with crimes. Clinton could lose the support of swing voters and lose the election.

Or, she could be wholly exonerated.

Yet curiously, the entire story does not appear to be trending on social media. Why not?

The short answer is that the social media algorithms or teams of people who decide what to put up in trending news are badly biased. Both the news media and social networks have resoundingly endorsed Clinton for president. The endorsements follow comments from Donald Trump which many find to be racist or sexist. Trump's own bombastic behavior has caused a serious backlash in the media.

It has long been rumored that social media is interfering with the news cycle, thus shaping the public's perception of reality instead of reporting it.

Several pro-Trump hashtags have been actively suppressed on social media including Facebook, Twitter and Buzzfeed. Anti-Obama tags and been suppressed as well as many things critical of Hillary Clinton. This is an attempt to engineer public opinion.

So much for deciding for oneself.
