Students at Penn State took to the streets to track down the clowns that may or may not pose a real danger to the community.

Penn State students heard there was a clown sighting near campus on Tuesday, prompting at least 500 students to arm themselves and take to the streets in an effort to hunt it down.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Addison Carson Tweeted: "3 Clowns spotted at PSU allegedly. So naturally 6,000 kids mob the streets to hunt it down. I love Penn State."

She attached a 29-second video of the mob flooding streets in search of the possibly dangerous clown.

Reports of frightening clown sightings have been pouring in from across the United States.

Some clowns have reportedly been attempting to lure children into vehicles, talk people into following them into alleys or the woods and one man dressed as a frightening clown before stabbing someone to death.

"Some people run away from clowns," one witness tweeted. "Penn State runs towards them."

Penn State Police Deputy Chief Thomas Sowerby told the Daily Collegian there was a supposed clown sighting Monday night, prompting the mob to gather the following day.

The clown sighting was never confirmed and police never received a first person report, but news spread when a student claimed her friend saw a clown.

Once the community heard the rumor, the police received several requests from parents to report exact locations, but no calls were made that night.

The students did not break out into acts of violence, no property was damaged and no injuries were reported, though Penn State Police reported noise complaints came in and some students requested Safe Walk escorts.

Chief Sowerby said the Penn State Police monitor trends on social media and online articles to better prepare for the clown sightings and possible dangers associated with them.

"People are fearful of what's going on, if they're concerned, we're concerned - we don't want people to be panicked by it," Sowerby stated.

"I think this is just the beginning for us. I think we are going to have more reports of this - crowds may form again, and you can always have copycats. I can't predict what individuals will do."

Penn State Police Sgt. Mike Nelson added: "The cause of this specifically was social media. If there were any clowns with this many students out there and with our police responding to calls, we would have ran into it."
