'Dr. Roth's actions jeopardized the safety of Michigan's healthcare system.'

Michigan OBGYN Michael Arthur Roth was involved in a car accident last September. What police found in his trunk and glove box resulted in his immediate arrest with nine charges.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - When Roth was involved in a car accident in September 2015, his vehicle was destroyed and was then impounded.

The West Bloomfield police station sent officers to retrieve items from the car and they were alarmed to discover Fentanyl, a drug used to induce abortions and five other abortion-related drugs prescribed to patients who had no connection to Roth, as well as containers of human tissue.

The county's medical examiner determined the containers held bits of children, left after either an abortion, miscarriage or birth.

Roth's history of being repeatedly sued by patients and sanctioned by health authorities only encouraged officers to check his home.

They were later seen carrying out grocery bags full of evidence, which investigators later claimed to have contained, in part, "large amounts" of cash, separated in bundles.

"This currency was divided and bundled with a paperclip," a West Bloomfield detective wrote in a supporting affidavit. "One bundle would be a small yellow sticky paper which had the last name of a person, and information that is believed to be the length of a person's pregnancy (i.e. 18[weeks]) with an amount also listed (i.e. 250)."

Syringes, disposable scalpels, more Fentanyl and empty containers matching those discovered with fetal parts in the vehicle were also discovered in his home.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette charged Roth with possession with intent to deliver narcotic Fentanyl, six counts of identity theft and three counts of larceny. He may also lose his license or have it suspended for violating the Michigan public health code.

Schuette's investigation led authorities to believe Roth has been performing illegal abortions outside the safety of a clinic.

The attorney general's office stated fentanyl is "commonly used as a sedative during [pregnancy] termination procedures," then added one medical assistant working in the same clinic as roth allegedly stole "medications used in abortions from the clinic for Roth," including Misoprostol, a pill that allows women to kill their children without undergoing surgery.

Schuette stated: "Dr. Roth's actions jeopardized the safety of Michigan's healthcare system. His attempt to break the law at the expense of his patient's safety is not only illegal, but goes against the code he took upon becoming a doctor."

Each charge Roth faces is a felony that carries hefty fines or long prison sentences, the most serious charge, the possession of Fentanyl, is a $25,000 fine and/or a 20-year-prison sentence.

Roth was arraigned in 48th District Court in Oakland County and assigned a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. He is required appear next for a pre-exam conference on July 7 before Judge Marc Barron.

Roth was also arraigned in the 38th District Court in Eastpointe and given another $10,000 recognizance bond and is required to appear in court for a pre-exam conference on July 12.
