Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

'I think the U.S. has a moral imperative to try and save these Christians and the other small minority groups.'

Senator Tom Cotton introduced the Religious Persecution Relief Act earlier this month, which would allow 10,000 Christian and other religious minorities to be relocated to the United States.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The bill would expedite the reviewing process meant to confirm migrants are victims of persecution and genocide in Iraq and Syria.

Senator Cotton's website includes a quote from Cotton, reading: "The Islamic State is seeking to eradicate Christians, Yazidis, Turkmen, Sabean-Mandeans, Jews, and other religious groups it sees as apostates and infidels.

"The United States cannot stand idly by and allow this persecution to continue. We must not only recognize what's happening as genocide, but also take action to relieve it. This bill will help save ancient faiths from genocide by allowing the United States to identify persecuted people to whom we can grant safe haven. And it will maintain the same security vetting process experienced by all other refugee applicants ensuring that the safety of the American people is protected."

Since Christian and other religious minority genocide was officially acknowledged by Congress last week, Secretary of State John Kerry stated the situation for religious minorities in ISIS-controlled territory was unlikely to change.

The United States, along with other coalition allies, have already been fighting ISIS, though Kerry believes the genocide label could encourage other countries to "end the scandal of silence."

The United States plans on continuing their current practice of collecting evidence and properly recording all acts against humanity at ISIS' hand, while Cotton attempts to move U.S. lawmakers to allow asylum to the persecuted religious.

"I think the U.S. has a moral imperative to try and save these Christians and other small minority groups," Cotton stated. "So I would create a special kind of visa program that wouldn't take any access away from anyone else in the United States, but would recognize that Christians - like Jews in the Soviet Union - are being singled out for persecution and elimination.

"That's in our interest, as it is in combating the Islamic State."
