LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - President Obama has made plans to pay their final respects to Justice Antonin Scalia on Friday instead of attending his funeral on Saturday. The questionable decision is being viewed as a snub to the conservative Supreme Court Justice.
It is unclear why Obama will not attend the funeral, but it has been suggested by one reporter that he will be playing golf, a common weekend activity for him.
Antonin Scalia was Catholic and the first Italian-American Supreme Court justice. He was known for his brilliant legal mind, his rhetoric and hard-hitting questions while hearing cases. However, his conservative positions created a lot of liberal enemies.
Now, the possibility that he could be replaced with a liberal justice is looming, causing the nation to panic. Traditionally, the Supreme Court has been slightly to the conservative side of the political spectrum, putting brakes on runaway liberalism that threatens to lurch the country to the left. However, if Scalia is replaced by a liberal justice then there will be no such balance on the court. The legal implications are staggering.
Republicans have vowed to take a page from Obama's own playbook and filibuster any appointment he makes. Obama himself once filibustered Samuel Alito, who was eventually confirmed.
Obama has pledged to nominate someone who he says will be indisputably qualified, which has many Americans hoping he will at least appoint a moderate.
This development also makes it critically important that Republicans win the White House in November and hold the Senate. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg is widely seen as the next to retire due to concerns over age and health. With her departure imminent, the next president will have the opportunity to appoint a conservative justice, thus restoring the balance of power on the court during his first term.
