LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - In New York City, Thousands of people flooded Times Square to witness performances by Carrie Underwood, Wiz Khalifa, Demi Lovato and Jessie J before the traditional ball drop.
Police were on alert and roughly 6,000 undercover officers and out-of-uniform officers moved through the streets. Mounted patrols, bomb-sniffing dogs, radiation detectors and other tech were utilized during the celebration.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio told CNN, "We have the capacity here to take a celebration like this and to make sure it's exceedingly safe. You'll see lots of police officers in regular uniforms and regular weaponry but you'll also see the heavily armed officers." In Las Vegas, the streets were packed and firework shows lit up the sky. Large bags and strollers were searched as heightened security alerts had many officers prepared for the worst, but the night went off without a hitch as the Strip housed thousands of partying visitors.Though America seemed to enjoy uninterrupted festivities, Dubai was victim to a "towering inferno" shortly before the New Year's fireworks display began.
The fire is believed to have started when curtains caught fire then spread through one of the city's upscale hotel rooms. The fire was reported at roughly 9:30 p.m. only 500 yards from the firework display location.
The fire appears to have started on the twentieth floor, and smoke can still be seen rising from that section of the hotel. Medics reported sixty injured people and one suffering a heart attack from the smoke and overcrowding.
As people scrambled to escape, they were reportedly climbing over each other, leaving one man to carry his disabled mother on his back as they rushed to safety.
Thankfully, no deaths have been reported and the fire is not believed to be related to terror attacks.
The city was aware of the fire, but continued with the festivities anyway with an impressive fireworks display.
In Germany, suicide attacks linked to ISIS were reported, leading to the closures of two busy Munich train stations.
The central Hauptbahnhof and Pasing stations were evacuated and service was delayed roughly eight hours.
The threat indicated up to seven possible attackers but no one has been detained and police checks have revealed no factual evidence to support the attack plan.
Despite the station closures and evacuations, Munich continued its celebrations.
The world has refused to cower in light of the recent terror attacks and continues to celebrate traditions in spite of continued threats.
