Each suspect blames the other

Bella "Baby Doe" Bond was found dead inside a duffel bag on a Boston shore last June and was recently identified thanks to tip-offs, leading to the arrest of her mother, Rachel Bond, and her mother's boyfriend Michael McCarthy.

During the arraignment yesterday, both suspects plead not guilty for Bella's murder. Neither suspect spoke to the other in court, but statements revealed they each placed the blame of Bella's death on the other and Bond claimed McCarthy had been holding her "captive."

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - After her image spread across the United States, the tragic and horrifying case of Bella Bond continues while both suspects plead not guilty in court. Ms. Bond was charged as an accessory for her daughter's murder and was held with a $1 million bond, while McCarthy was charged for the child's murder without bail.

According to the prosecution, McCarthy killed Bella after thinking she was a demon and dumped her body days later.

Prosecutor David Deakin said that the Bella became "unruly" one night and McCarthy intervened. He entered her room to quiet down the child and put her into bed. However, Ms. Bond followed and saw her boyfriend standing over Bella with his hand near the toddler's abdomen. She claimed she saw her daughter was dead after she went to check on the quiet girl.

"When Miss. Bond looked at Bella, her head was swollen, and her face was gray. She asked Mr. McCarthy what he had done, he did not tell her but said; 'She was a demon, and it was her time to die,'" said Deakin.

According to The Daily Mail, Ms. Bond kept her head down and wiped away tears as details of her daughter's murder unfolded in court. McCarthy, the prime suspect, kept shaking his head in disbelief. The prosecutor added that the two put Bella's body inside the refrigerator and continued to "shoot up heroin" together for the next few days.

Then, McCarthy allegedly placed the child's body inside a weighted duffel bag and dropped it into the Boston water.

Bella's godmother Megan Fewtrell shocked the court when she suddenly screamed at McCarthy, crying out that he "rot in hell."

Fewtrell, who knew Bond for 8 years, was led out of the courtroom. She said that Bond had promised she would do well with Bella, considering the fate of her two older children who had been sent to live with relatives.

Joseph Amoroso, Bella's biological father who last week went to Boston to meet her, sat in the front row looking emotional throughout the proceedings. Although he had left Bond due to her past as a prostitute and her current drug addiction, Amoroso said that he believed her statement of McCarthy holding her captive and drugging her through neck injections.

He said Bond told him she feared McCarthy, who said he would kill her if she went to the police.
The exact cause of Bella's death is still under investigation.
