LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (Catholic Online) - The Washington Post reported Pope Francis' popemobile parade following his White House visit on September 23 will be the best chance for people without tickets to catch a glimpse of the pontiff.
Each of the four entrances to the parade route will have security screening areas from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m., after which the Secret Service will be closing off entrance.
Pope Francis will not be on the street until 11 a.m. but as previously reported, security has become increasingly more secure as the pontiff's arrival draws near.
Jane Belford, chairwoman of the planning committee for the Archdiocese of Washington announced the northeast quadrant of Washington Monument grounds -near the NW corner of 15th and Constitution Avenue- will feature a Jumbotron that will display video feeds of the White House and following events. People can watch the Jumbotron all day to see the events taking place at the White House and the Basilica.
Music and programs related to the papal visit will air on the Jumbotron after Pope Francis' visit to the White House concludes and will continue to stream through the Mass from the Basilica live at 4 p.m.
The parade route will begin on Ellipse street and will turn left at Constitution Avenue before making another left onto 15th street. All surrounding roads will be closed from 9 p.m. September 22 through noon September 23.
Secretary for the pastoral ministry and social concerns, Susan Timoney, said priests will be available around the parade route to hear confessions. She said, "It will be very low key, perhaps people will take a walk" with the priests.
Following the delivery of Mass from the east portico of the basilica, Pope Francis will canonize Junipero Serra, an 18th-century Franciscan friar. This will be the first time the Catholic Church will hold a saint-making ceremony in North America.
Pope Francis has admitted to feeling like he was trapped in a "sardine can" when he travels in the bulletproof popemobile but continues to do so.
There will be several popemobiles available in each city the pontiff travels to in the United States. There are also several models, including Toyota, Mercedes, Kia, Hyudnai and Isuzo the Vatican said.
