LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The unnamed 32-year-old veteran officer was shot in the head, his body found stripped of his gun and equipment.

The suspects were only described as "two white and one black man."

Reports indicate the fallen officer was pursuing the three men and was able to radio the station to report his location. Shortly after reporting his position, radio contact was lost and he was later found dead from gunshot wounds. Whether the wounds were from weapons the suspects carried or his own is uncertain.

The massive manhunt for the three suspects include the FBI, U.S. marshals, SWAT, ATF, K9 units and of course the Chicago police department.

Fox Lake residents have been put on lockdown and were told to stay indoors. Every local school has been on lockdown since the manhunt began, with students kept in classrooms.

Lake Country Undersheriff Raymond Rose has urged people to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity. SWAT teams and  heavily armed local authorities go door-to-door in an attempt to track the suspects. K9 units have been sent into wooded areas while FBI and US Marshals cover nearby major highway Route 21, which connects to Chicago and is 60 miles south of Fox Lake.

The search is serious with helicopters flying above swampy areas and suspensions in commuter train services. The FAA has also imposed a two-mile no-fly zone around the search area.

Illinois Congresswoman Barbara Wheeler responded immediately to the news and issued a statement to help keep citizens calm, saying "As information continues to come in about the shooting of another police officer in the line of duty in Fox Lake, I hope we can all remain calm and pray for the officer's family and the other officers in harms-way right now."

Wheeler continued with a few somber words: "Eleven police officers have needlessly lost their lives since August 20th alone in America because of shootings and sadly our communities have been directly impacted today."
