MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Last year brought a historical pace in the number of illegal immigrants reaching U.S. soil. This year, however, brings the tally to a possible 30,000 more, according to the United Nations.

Although many immigrants are being stopped in Mexico, as they flee countries like the Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, the number of illegal immigrant children and teens is still expected to increase this year.

"The numbers are surging," said Linda Hartke, president of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service [LIRS], one of the United State's premier humanitarian-immigration groups that helps with the legal and housing of immigrants, especially with children.

President Barrack Obama's urges Mexico to help them solve the immigrant problem; Mexico is already starting to seize the children and families that are trying to cross the borders. Unfortunately, according to the LIRS, these immigrants are kept in detention, places with horrible conditions before being deported back home.

An impressive number of 100,000 immigrants were stopped last year in reaching U.S. soil, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Computing 70,000 youths who surged over the border, plus the thousands who have possibly died or were taken by gangs during their dangerous trip along the Mexican and U.S. border brings the number to a possible 200,000 youths who tried to make it to the U.S.

Issues on how the U.S. officials are handling immigrant children and teens is now being questioned and monitored by the UNHCR. Protections for these illegal immigrants should be strengthened according to Nicole Boehner, protection associate with the UNHCR.

The humanitarian group believes that officials should still practice empathy and ethnic care for these individuals while trying to enforce the law. All interactions with the teens and children should carry the best interest for both parties.
