New research suggests that areas in the northern part of the United States have higher mortality rates for black Americans and the people were found to be more racist. Researchers from the University of Maryland, found that areas with more people Google searching the N-word were observed as having higher mortality rates among the blacks. They also suggest a relationship perpetuating health crisis.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - "Research suggests that racism is a major culprit that contributes to the gap in mortality between blacks and whites. Our study points to the utility of an Internet-search based measure to monitor racism at the area-level and assess its impact on mortality," said the lead author and Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, David Chae, through a statement.
Studies regarding racism are typically based on data gathered from self-reporting, these researchers used a different mode for data collection in the study. With less self-censorship online, they used Internet queries as a measurement of attitude towards "people of different color."
Researchers also understand that not all queries regarding the N-word are automatically racism, thus they conducted evaluations of the searches.
The findings state that among 196 observed locations, the mapped areas with higher queries also had an increase of 8.2 percent in mortality rate among Black Americans, using the information from the National Center for Health Statistics from 2004 to 2009. The statistical findings amounted to 300,000 death per year.
In the study abstract, most of the deaths were significantly associated with heart disease, cancer and stroke, according to The Blaze. The study claims that racism against the Blacks is consequently affecting their health and shaping up the trend of mortality.
With evidences at hand, Chae suggests that racism is "social toxin that increases susceptibility to disease and generates racial disparities in health."
