Liberals cry foul as economic upturn could cause one million Americans to lose out on food stamps

One of the major benefits of a rebounded and healthy economy is that new jobs are created, which helps lower the number of Americans on unemployment and welfare, but many liberal groups want Congress to change federal laws which limits how long persons may be eligible to receive unemployment and food stamps after they have lost their job.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank, is urging a federal law, which limits the time that a person can receive food stamps, be changed.

Currently, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) allows adults without children to receive food stamps for only three months, unless they attend a job training program or are working for at least 20 hours every week.
This 90 day grace period came about in the mid-90s, an effort to reach a compromise between those who wanted well fare recipients to have an incentive to find work, and those who wanted to give a full ride to the needy.
During the recent economic recession, most states gave out waivers over the 90 day limit, due to the rapid surge in unemployment. Even now, over 40 states still have waivers, either full or partial, on how long an adult can be on the SNAP program.
But with the recent economic upturn, this 90 day cap is about to come back into play, and the Center estimates that about 1 million adults could lose benefits, though they claim most fall below the poverty line.
2015 is the perfect year to become spiritually healthy!
"The loss of this food assistance, which averages approximately $150 to $200 per person per month for this group, will likely cause serious hardship among many," the Center's report reads.
The Center says that states need to prepare to intervene in these "heavily affected local communities", where food banks and homeless shelters will see a rapid and sharp increase in use, starting a large surge in demands for food.
