LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A series of emails from the CIA's chief of interrogations, from January 2003, show that officials were already aware that the secret prison program was not working, and the brutal treatment of prisoners was a disaster "waiting to happen."
Combat corruption with moral education; send a Bible to a child, or another person in need.
"I intend to get the hell off the train before it happens," the chief of interrogations wrote.
He had told his superiors that he had "serious reservations" about the program, and no longer wanted to be involved "in any way."
In a summary of the 6,000-page Senate Intelligence Committee report which was released on December 9, the CIA was painted as a dysfunction organization filled with disorganization, incompetence and greed.
The Senate's findings suggest that the CIA was not prepared to deal with Al-Qaeda suspects, and misrepresented confessions if they got them.
On the same day, the CIA attempted to defend themselves, stating that the report did not reveal the whole picture, or acknowledge steps that were taken to fix incompetence and inefficiency.
"The study as a whole leads the reader to believe that the management shortcomings that marked the initial months persisted throughout the program, which is historically inaccurate," the agency stated.
The Senate's report also lambasted the CIA for ignoring findings from a report the agency conducted on torture in 1989, which they sent to Congress.
The report said "inhumane physical or psychological techniques are counterproductive because they do not produce intelligence and will probably result in false answers."
Democrats behind the Senate's report agreed. They found that waterboarding, wall-slamming, nudity, cold and other ill treatment produced little information that was useful in preventing further acts of terrorism or apprehending other suspects.
