Republicans pick up nine seats for 2015 congress

Adding insult to injury, Republican Bill Cassidy has defeated the incumbent Senator, Democrat Mary Landrieu, for control of the Louisiana senate seat, ending the 2014 midterm Republican referendum against President Obama and his Democrats.

When the 114th Congress convenes in January, the Republicans will have 54 seats in the Senate, and a larger majority in the House of Representatives.

Cassidy called his victory an "exclamation point" for the midterm elections.

"This victory happened because people in Louisiana voted for a government which serves us but does not tell us what to do," he said. "That y'all."

Cassidy's campaign for the November election and this runoff blasted Landrieu, naming her as a key supporter and enabler of President Obama's policies. This scored big with the voters in the state and was one factor that helped Cassidy grab the seat.

During his victory speech Cassidy did not list any specifics about his agenda in the new Senate, but he did say that his victory was just part of America's demand for a new direction for the country, especially on issues like health care, the budget and energy policy.

"We may not have won tonight, but we have certainly won some extraordinary victories," Landrieu said when her defeat was announced.

"It's been a fight worth waging," she said.

The loss of seats to Republicans in Louisiana has echoed the losses Democrats have suffered in other states. Alaska, North Carolina, Arkansas, Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia have all fallen to Republicans, giving the GOP a large majority in Congress the likes of which haven't been seen since the end of WWII.

It is clear that the American people have spoken out, and that Obama's policies, domestic and abroad, are not appreciated nor welcome.
