LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Once incident involved the death of Eric Garner in July of this year. Garner was placed into a chokehold by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo, which caused his death, all caught on cellphone video by a friend of Garner.

Pantaleo's conduct was looked at by a grand jury, but they chose not to indict him, which sparked two nights of protests in New York and in cities across the nation including Boston, Chicago and Washington. Activist leaders are promising that there will be more protests.
Garner, a 43-year-old, was filmed struggling to breath, which he was able to tell the three officers who were restraining him.
Legal representatives for Garner's family reported that medical examiners found that the chokehold lead to his death, with his asthma and obesity contributing.
The second incident is the funeral of a man who was shot and killed by a police officer in a dark stairwell in Brooklyn in November. The police have reported that the shooting was unintentional.
Eric Holder, the U.S. Attorney General, has spoken out on the cases, and said that the Justice Department will look into a potential civil rights investigation for Garner's death, as well as the death of Michael Brown, who was killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Legal experts do not believe the federal government will be able to press charges.
The NYPD has tried to be light handed with the protestors, steering marchers away from the nationally televised Christmas tree lighting ceremony which occurred on December 3, but otherwise gave them free reign.
