"We lift off confident in the Afghan's ability to secure the region," said Army Lieutenant General Joseph Anderson, the commander ISAF Joint Command.

"The mission has been complex, difficult and dangerous. Everyone has made tremendous sacrifices, but those sacrifices have not been in vain."

Of the 2,201 U.S. servicemen who have died in Afghanistan, 418 have been Marines. Somewhat unsurprisingly, 92% of those casualties-or 385 deaths-have occurred under the administration of President Barack Obama, CNSNews reports.

Between January 20, 2009 and the end of 2009, 68 Marines died; while 165 died in 2010. In 2011, 78 Marines died, and 58 died in 2012. Eight Marines died in both 2013 and 2014.

Army casualties made up about 75% of all deaths in Afghanistan, and among them Sergeants and Specialists made up about 49% of all KIA servicemen.

731 Army sergeants-including the ranks of staff sergeant, sergeant first class and master sergeant-made up 32% of the KIA totals. 374 Army specialists died-16% of the total.

The Navy had 98 casualties in the war, while the Air Force had the lowest at 79. Combined, these two branches had 8% of the KIA totals.
