The President will address Holder's resignation that same Thursday, from the White House State Room.
Holder had discussed his intention to resign personally with the President on a number of occasions over the last few months, but did not finalize those plans until he had an hour-long conversation with the President at the White House during the Labor Day weekend.
Holder is set to remark on his love of the Justice Department, one that he has fosters since he was a boy and saw it-under Attorney General Robert Kennedy-advance the civil right movement. During his time in office, Holder even had a portrait of Kennedy in his conference room.
Back in 2013, Holder described his first meeting with the President, who was at the time a newly elected senator.
"I sat next to him at this dinner and we just started talking about a variety of things, sports among them and criminal justice issues. And we saw that we had a lot of similar views and so we just started a relationship that was casual," he said.
Holder has been somewhat of a controversial figure, especially among conservatives who felt that he was dishonest in an effort to protect the President from being blamed for legal wrongs.
However, an administration official from the White House noted some of Holder's accomplishments while in office. The official said Holder had established a legacy of civil right enforcement and had restored fairness to the criminal justice system.
"He revitalized the Justice Department's praised Civil Rights Division, protected the rights of the LGBT community, successfully prosecuted terrorists, and fought tirelessly for voting rights, to name a few," the official said.
