P>MIAMI,FL (Catholic Online) - On Saturday, May 19, 2012, the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) met in Miami, Florida. They passed a resolution in which they rejected Marriage and declared by Fiat that homosexual acts are now a civil right.
I know that such a blunt assessment of their corporate action will raise the ire of the leadership of homosexual equivalency movement such as the Human Rights Campaign. They immediately championed this move as some breakthrough for their redefined notion of "marriage equality". The phrase is code for the effort to destroy the uniqueness of true marriage by redefining the word.
The Human Rights Campaign calls itself "America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality." They are well-funded and committed to a cultural and social revolution. They poured massive amounts of money and human resources into electing the President who has now "evolved" his way out of defending marriage. Along with him they are committed to "remaking America."
They are at the forefront of the "Homosexual Equivalency Movement". Homosexual equivalency activists insist that all Americans MUST recognize a legal equivalency between true marriages and cohabitating practicing homosexuals or they will face legal punitive consequences. The Human Rights Campaign uses the Courts and the legislature to force this new America on all of us. They have the unbridled support of the Executive Branch of the Government. This Administration unilaterally decided not to enforce Federal Law, the Defense of Marriage Act.
The effort to equate how one engages in non-marital sexual acts with a member of the same sex with being a member of a particular race or gender (thereby making practicing homosexuals a "protected class" for civil rights purposes) is legally and socially dangerous. One is a status; the other involves a behavior and a lifestyle. To confine marriage to heterosexual couples is not discriminatory. Homosexual couples cannot bring into existence what marriage intends by its very definition.
The NAACP Resolution is filled with the sophistry and verbal subterfuge influenced by the Homosexual Equivalency Movement:
"The NAACP Constitution affirmatively states our objective to ensure the "political, educational, social and economic equality" of all people. Therefore, the NAACP has opposed and will continue to oppose any national, state, local policy or legislative initiative that seeks to codify discrimination or hatred into the law or to remove the Constitutional rights of LGBT citizens. We support marriage equality consistent with equal protection under the law provided under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Further, we strongly affirm the religious freedoms of all people as protected by the First Amendment."
The last sentence of the resolution betrays the entire claim. The position officially espoused by the NAACP as an organization now excludes faithful Catholics and other Christians who know that Marriage is ontologically between one man and one woman. The NAACP leaders have aligned themselves with those who seek to compel Catholics and other Christians to violate their religious convictions. So much for the religious freedom the organization purports to affirm.
In his apostolic exhortation on the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Charity, Pope Benedict summarized the duty of Catholics when confronted with the assault on authentic marriage: "Marriage and the family are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature, since whatever is injurious to them is injurious to society itself."
Those who support marriage as a lifelong committed relationship between one man and one woman are pilloried in the press. No matter where one stands on other issues, if you support marriage - as marriage - you are brushed with all the disparaging terms can be thrown at those who insist that there is any such a thing as objective truth in this age of moral relativism.
In order to help understand what is occurring let me borrow a Property Rights Analogy. It does not come close in terms of the magnitude of the danger we now face because persons and their flourishing are so much more vitally important than the ownership of property. However, it may help to unmask the tactics being used.
We still defend the private ownership of property as a "right" in the United States. Let's say a group among us decides that "private property" should mean that our land also belongs to the neighbors on adjoining land. Why? Because they decided that approach was better and simply changed the definition.
Then, imagine that they decided to enforce that private opinion upon the broader society, insisting that the law recognize their new definition by giving it an equivalent status to the "traditional" notion of private property. They further decide to enforce their new definition with the Police Power of the State.
Next, imagine that the President of the United States decided to no longer defend the right to private property and ordered the Justice Department to no longer defend property ownership. The analogy does not even come close to the seriousness of this assault on marriage and family. Ironically, it may actually apply to private property if this administration continues its class warfare.
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Catholic Church addressed efforts to redefine marriage in 2003, "The Church's teaching on marriage and on the complementarity of the sexes reiterates a truth that is evident to right reason and recognized as such by all the major cultures of the world."
"Marriage is not just any relationship between human beings. It was established by the Creator with its own nature, essential properties and purpose. No ideology can erase from the human spirit the certainty that marriage exists solely between a man and a woman, who by mutual personal gift, proper and exclusive to themselves, tend toward the communion of their persons. In this way, they mutually perfect each other, in order to cooperate with God in the procreation and upbringing of new human lives."
Government has long regulated marriage for the common good. For example, the ban on polygamy and age requirements were enforced in order to ensure that there was a mature decision at the basis of the Marriage contract. Heterosexual marriage, procreation, and the nurturing of children form the foundation for family and civil society.
The assault on marriage is led by those who in an Orwellian two step now purport to be defending Marriage. Marriage is not simply a "religious" construct. The Natural Law reveals - and the cross cultural history of civilization affirms - that marriage is between a man and a woman, open to children and intended for life.
Marriage is the foundation for the family which is the privileged place for the formation of virtue and character in children, our future citizens. The family is the first society, first economy, first school, first civilizing and mediating institution and first government.
All other government proceeds from the first government, the marriage bound family. The effort to force giving equal legal status to relationships which are incapable of being marriages and then use the Police Power of the State to enforce this new order is not about civil or equal rights at all. It is all about Cultural Revolution.
Finally, the NAACP has taken a position directly at odds with the majority of many whom the organization claims to represent. Giving voice to this position are heroes such as Dr Alveda King, the founder of King for America and Pastoral Associate for Priests for Life. She told Christian Newswire:
"Neither my great-grandfather an NAACP founder, my grandfather Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr. an NAACP leader, my father Rev. A. D. Williams King, nor my uncle Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. embraced the homosexual agenda that the current NAACP is attempting to label as a civil rights agenda. In the 21st Century, the anti-traditional marriage community is in league with the anti-life community, and together with the NAACP and other sympathizers, they are seeking a world where homosexual marriage and abortion will supposedly set the captives free."
She is joined by other brave men and women who have not lost their moral compass such as Dr. Day Gardner, founder of the National Black Prolife Union who commented that "Many Black people are realizing just how far off the mark the NAACP is with regard to the real issues and the most important problems facing the black community. The NAACP organization was founded by blacks who had an understanding and strong faith in God."
"They were people -- pastors and congregations who knew that the Bible -- which is God's final word -- was indeed very clear on the immorality and wages of homosexuality and abortion. It is appalling that this one time super hero 'civil rights' organization supports the breakdown of traditional marriage and the ruthless killing of our unborn children -- as a civil right."
"In its decision to please the world, the NAACP has turned its back on the things of God, therefore, we must encourage those who know the truth to speak out -- to stand firmly on the solid rock -- to not look to the right or to the left. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
The leaders of the NAACP have lost their moral compass. Members of the organization who have not should work, along with others, to ensure that its important work for genuine equality and real civil and human rights not suffer as a result.
