We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this
Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

CHICAGO (Catholic Online) - In the view of many, many people, the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois, is one of the most beautiful Cathedrals in the United States. It is also the Chair ("Cathedra") of the Cardinal Archbishop of the Diocese of Chicago, Francis Cardinal George, one of the preeminent Churchmen of the Catholic Church in the United States.
Fortunately, this beautiful 134 year old Church Building and Chicago landmark will continue to provide a home for worshippers, a site of beauty for pilgrims and a place of refuge for the poor. An early morning Wednesday fire threatened the beautiful structure but was extinguished through the hard work of Chicago firefighters and the prayers of the faithful.
The firefighters braved the frigid temperatures as flames roared through the roof of the structure early on Wednesday morning. There were no injuries. The Pastor of the Cathedral parish, Fr. Danel Mayall, told reporters that the fires set off the sprinkler system which aided the firefighters in controlling the flames and prevented what could have been even more extensive damage.
