Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Two officials spoke to The Daily Beast and explained the Marines were deployed near the front lines of what most believe will be the "biggest battle of the war."
On Monday, Army Col. Steven Warren, a spokesman for the U.S. effort in Iraq, told reporters: "We made the decision a month ago to announce this on the 20th [of March]. We didn't want to make the announcement until they were fully operational. They became fully operational on Friday."
Though the Marines' base was operational on Friday, prior to its completion helicopters flew in artillery units and soldiers while ISIS terrorists simply sat back and watched. The two unnamed officials explained the United States military thinks ISIS was able to easily target the Marines after watching them build the fire base, which is a temporary base with little reinforcement, security or fortification.
The fire base, known as Firebase Bell was attacked twice within three days. In one attack on Monday, a squad of ISIS fighters attempted to storm a Marine compound, resulting in two dead terrorists and entirely unscathed Marines.
The rest of the ISIS group "ran away in fear," Warren stated.Meanwhile, a rocket attack on Saturday killed U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Louis Cardin and wounded eight others. Three were flown to Germany, with one of them described to have been seriously injured.
Despite efforts to provide decent protection for the Marines, the helicopters were entirely visible.
Warren noted, "You can't hide 200 Marines."
The fire base is the first all-American base and it sits 10 miles from ISIS front lines. Several groups believe the fire base will be used to help reclaim Mosul and defense officials revealed several more fire bases would be erected.
There are believed to be over 5,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, with the Obama insisting none were engaged in combat until earlier this year.
