LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Saturday's suicide car bombing, carried out by Kurdish militants from PKK, has rounded up a death count of 37 people with 125 others injured, 19 of whom are in serious condition, according to the Daily Mail.
"Our people should not worry, the struggle against terrorism will for certain end in success and terrorism will be brought to its knees," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, leading up to Turkey's counterattack. According to reports, 11 Turkish warplanes hit Kurdish rebel targets at 18 different positions the day following the attack, including the Qandil mountains where the group's leadership stands.
Heart-wrenching footage caught on camera shows cars travelling through the main square when the explosion was set off, causing a wave of several other vehicles to erupt in flames. According to an anonymous police source, the bomb was full of nails and pellets to reach "maximum injury and carnage."
"There were about 40 people," explained 28-year-old Dogan Asik, who was on a packed bus during the incident. "It (the bus) slowed down. A car went by us, and 'boom' it exploded." Asik survived, but sustained injuries to his face and arms.
According to the Daily Mail, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara sent out a terrorist attack warning on March 11, just one day before the attack.
"We advise U.S. citizens to review their personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings and local events, monitor local news stations for updates, and follow local authority instructions," stated the U.S. Embassy, further warning U.S. citizens to avoid the Bahcelievler area of Ankara.
Many worry Turkey may not be able to handle the continuous attacks on both sides from two different terrorist organizations, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and ISIS.
"The President should go back to reopening peace talks with moderate Kurdish nationalists, taking a more balanced approach to Syria and to restore ties with Syria, Iraq and neighbouring countries," explained Fadi Hakura, a Turkey expert. "There's no doubt that Europe could show a bit more solidarity with Turkey, but really the issue lies with the Turkish Government. I think the best way forward is a political settlement because in Turkey it is political rather than security or military."
This recent attack in Turkey may not directly affect the United States, but it shows that threats need to be taken seriously and when a terrorist, be it ISIS or another dangerous organization, initiates an attack, they do not care who gets harmed. No one religion, or one ethnicity is safe from an attack and counterattacks are not preventing all of the new and potentially more lethal attacks.
Hakura does not appear optimistic in his statements searching for peace, as he believes reaching peace is not possible in his lifetime, but we can not give up and sit by as more lives are taken from God's earth. Take this time to say a prayer for not only those injured and killed in the attack, but for everyone who stands in danger of experiencing this evil in their life.
