LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the Washington Times, Defense officials reported on Wednesday that weaponized mustard gas has been turned into a powder form and will be used against ISIS' enemies in Iraq and Syria.
The powder was placed in artillery shells that are reportedly not concentrated enough to kill, but are still capable of serious injury and can "maim people."
The chemical weapons expert, identified by two Iraqi officials speaking with anonymity, sleiman Daoud al-Afari, was a former chemical and biological weapons expert in Saddam Hussein's Military Industrialization Authority. He is roughly 50-years-old and was leading ISIS' chemical weapons research until his capture in Tal Afar.
CNN reported Defense Secretary Ash Carter released a statement last month saying the ISIS chemical research program is "something we watch very closely and it's something we take action against."
As Al-Afari was described as a "significant" operative by Pentagon officials, they have been interrogating him since his capture, and he has released a plethora of information. Some of the information helped the United States military conduct at least two airstrikes aimed at buildings believed to be the sites of ISIS' chemical weapons program.
The Daily Beast reported a Pentagon official admitting, "They have gotten a lot of information from this guy. A lot."
Despite multiple airstrikes in areas Al-Afari claimed to be prime chemical program buildings, officials remain unable to explain why his capture has not jeopardized airstrikes, or why ISIS doesn't seem to have noticed the loss of one of their more important leaders.
Since U.S. Special Operations forces began interrogating Al-Afari, targets have shifted to areas the operative indicates.
