LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The Pentagon has conceded that U.S. ground forces are in combat in Iraq, in spite of President Obama's assurances to the contrary.
Army Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the Pentagon, told reporters, "We're in combat. I mean, of course, this is a combat zone. There's a war going on in Iraq, if folks haven't noticed. And we're here and it's all around us."
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter shared an even more startling revelation, "there are American troops in combat every day," he told reporters at the Pentagon, speaking about Iraq. He then backtracked a little and reminded that our mission there is merely to train Iraqi forces.
Carter also mentioned that American personnel have been wounded in Iraq.
This is reminiscent of the early days of American escalation in Vietnam, where the troops were sent over as "advisers" with a training role, which later became an active combat role and a full-blown, although undeclared war.
Most alarmingly, despite the lessons of the past, and the assurances of President Obama, he has allowed, and possibly placed American troops in harm's way. This makes Obama's original statement a lie.
The U.S. has been conducting airstrikes and drone strikes against the Islamic State (ISIS) on a daily basis. U.S. ground forces were sent to train Iraqi troops so they could hold their own in combat. However, neither of these strategies seems to have significantly diminished the combat capability of ISIS. This is likely what is prompting an increased U.S. involvement in Iraq.
The briefings at the Pentagon on Wednesday concerned the death of Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler, who was killed in combat during a special operations raid on an ISIS prison. That raid saved as many as 70 lives and was an example of American and Kurdish heroism.
While the Pentagon continues to insist the U.S. role in Iraq is purely advisory, those with a memory of history are having a difficult time distinguishing between the old lies about Vietnam and the new lies about Iraq.
