Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

Iran Supreme Leader band further negotiations

On Wednesday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei prohibited further negotiations between Iran and the United States, further isolating Iran following July's nuclear deal.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Khamenei, who is the highest authority in the Islamic Republic, has not declared an outright ban. However, last month he said there would be no more talks with the US after the nuclear deal concluded.

In his address to Revolutionary Guards Navy Commanders, Khamenei said talks with the United States only brought disadvantages to Iran. He was quoted on his website, which reads: "Negotiations with the United States open gates to their economic, cultural, political, and security influence. Even during the nuclear negotiations they tried to harm our national interests."
His statements contradict those of the moderate Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, who claimed his government was ready to negotiate and work with the US to resolve the conflict in Syria.
Even if he supported the last 18 months of negotiations, Khamenei hasn't publicly endorsed the nuclear deal with the US, Russia, Germany, France, Britain and China.
The West worried Iran wanted to develop nuclear weapons while Iranians, who have been looking forward to the improvement of their living standards and better relations with the rest of the world, welcomed the agreement despite it curbing Tehran's nuclear program.
There were hundreds of Iranian troops that arrived in Syria last month. They will apparently join Lebanese Hezbollah allies and government forces in a major ground offensive backed by Russian airstrikes. The West continues to argue against Russia's air campaign goals, which have been the cause of disagreements between Moscow and NATO.
Khamenei told the Guards, "We are in a critical situation now as the enemies are trying to change the mentality of our officials and our people on the revolution and our national interests." When Khamenei spoke of an unspecified enemy, he was referring to Western powers -specifically the United States and Israel, which he believes have been plotting to overthrow the Islamic Republic.
His comments could trigger lawmakers to push for the impeachment of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who shook hands with US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. In an interview on Tuesday, Zarif said, "On and off the record, it was an accident. It has already cost me at home. But everything I do, costs me at home, so this is not an aberration."
